Swimming in saltwater or freshwater- Earlier, the assumption was that the salt could help to disinfect and speed up the healing process. Hence, doctors would recommend swimming in the ocean or lakes. But it has been found that contaminants and pollution in the water can dramatically increase your risk of infection. Hence, swimming of any kind should be avoided after a hair transplant.
Additional Precautions for Swimming Post Hair Transplant
The general rule is to stay clear from swimming for two to four weeks after surgery or until your surgeon clears you. The hair grafts at the scalp’s recipient and donor areas need sufficient time to heal. The scabs should heal and fall off on their own. One should take all precautions to avoid infection of the surgical site.
Even after your surgeon clears you from swimming, there are a few things to keep in mind to keep your scalp and hair healthy. Pay attention to the transplant donor area.
In some diving positions, the donor area may take a direct hit and strain the area. They could be when the chin touches the chest or similar “head down” positions. Along with this, positions that pull along the sides or back of the head should be avoided during the healing period. If one does not follow these precautions, it could slow the donor area’s healing and hinder the procedure’s success.
