All over the world, millions of men and women suffer from hair problems and hair loss in particular. About 90% of them seek hair treatment. Before opting for surgery, we recommend many non-surgical techniques at Hair Sure International. However, hair loss and balding are a result of dead hair follicles. In any hair transplant technique, the basic procedure involves extracting small groups of healthy hair follicles—called grafts—and transplanting them to the site with thinning or no hair.
Depending on which technique has been selected, a single session can take four or more hours. The number of sessions required depends on the area of baldness and the number of grafts that are being transplanted. For long-lasting results, post-procedural care plays a crucial role. It would help if you had sufficient time in your hands to rest and regularly attend the follow-ups. The newly transplanted hair grafts should heal properly so that the new hair will grow properly as designed before the surgery.
Post Hair Transplant Experience in a nutshell
Since a hair transplant is a surgery, your scalp will be very tender, so you must take pain medication for several days. For the first 48 hours, you will have bandages over your scalp. The newly-placed hair is dead and will fall out within two to three weeks. After eight to 12 months, you will see the new hair, as discussed before the surgery. You must set your expectations properly before the surgery itself. Know beforehand the density of hair, the look of the hairline, etc.
Post Hair Transplant Care
Any strenuous activity is discouraged for approximately two weeks because the stitches will not be removed for about 10 days after the surgery. You can shower 48 hours after your procedure, but swimming after a hair transplant is discouraged until your hair surgeon gives you an OK.
Effects of Swimming after Hair Transplant
If you got your hair transplant done in the summer, there is no doubt that taking a dip in the pool can be quite relaxing. But, alas, you have to wait for some time. Remember that swimming too soon after the surgery can lead to a certain risk.
Swimming in chlorinated water- The water in the pool consists of chlorine, which keeps bacteria and viruses in the water at bay. However, chlorine damages or irritates the hair grafts or your sensitive scalp. The recommendation is to avoid chlorinated water for two weeks to a month following the procedure.
Swimming in saltwater or freshwater- Earlier, the assumption was that the salt could help to disinfect and speed up the healing process. Hence, doctors would recommend swimming in the ocean or lakes. But it has been found that contaminants and pollution in the water can dramatically increase your risk of infection. Hence, swimming of any kind should be avoided after a hair transplant.
Additional Precautions for Swimming Post Hair Transplant
The general rule is to stay clear from swimming for two to four weeks after surgery or until your surgeon clears you. The hair grafts at the scalp’s recipient and donor areas need sufficient time to heal. The scabs should heal and fall off on their own. One should take all precautions to avoid infection of the surgical site.
Even after your surgeon clears you from swimming, there are a few things to keep in mind to keep your scalp and hair healthy. Pay attention to the transplant donor area.
In some diving positions, the donor area may take a direct hit and strain the area. They could be when the chin touches the chest or similar “head down” positions. Along with this, positions that pull along the sides or back of the head should be avoided during the healing period. If one does not follow these precautions, it could slow the donor area’s healing and hinder the procedure’s success.
