Alok Sharma had come to India for his brother’s wedding. Alok is 36 years old and was very concerned about his hair loss which had a rapid increase over the last one year. Alok was running short of time as he came only for three weeks. He met a friend during his visit who had got a SHI hair transplant done. In an FUE hair transplant, the graft survival depends on various factors like maintenance of hydration, reduced handling, cold temperature and asepsis. The hair grafts can dry up if they get exposed to air for more than 10-20 seconds. Small grafts are at a greater risk for graft damage or drying.
Other reasons that contribute in the drying of the hair grafts are:
- While placing the graft
- While moving the graft from one location to another
- While graft trimming
- And if the grafts are not immediately immersed in the physiologic solution immediately after removing
The solution which the clinical team uses for the graft survival should be accurate in their compositions along with the grafts being stored in the solution in time. If the graft is exposed to the air for long, the risk of its damage is higher. This risk of damage reflects on the skill and the experience of the doctor and the assisting surgical team.
The hair graft time outside the body must be reduced significantly. Reducing the time of the graft’s exposure to air helps in avoiding any damage to the grafts. SHI is unique because the procedure involves implanting the grafts into the recipient areas that are placed in prior while being harvested. SHI procedure of implantation consists of 5-6 doctors, and the procedure is done simultaneously which reduces the time to 5 to 6 hrs for implanting almost 3000 grafts. It cuts down the time of the hair grafts being exposed to air, resulting in an immediate storage of the grafts in the physiologic solution. The grafts are then picked by the other members of the team to place them in the recipient area.
