The monsoon season brings great relief from the scoring heat. Though the season is a beautiful time of the year, it brings its own set of problems. Even though it drops the temperatures with rains, it’s still on the higher side with moisture and humidity added with insufficient sunlight. The monsoon season becomes a breeding place for fungus and bacteria. The season also brings various types of seasonal infections such as skin irritation, smelly feet, itchy scalp, and scalp infections. Last but not least, the most common problem during monsoon season is hair fall.
Why are hair issues common during monsoon?
Due to the presence of high humidity in the air, the hair becomes sticky and greasy. Especially during monsoon, the scalp becomes a breeding place for several organisms, which causes dandruff, and oily scalp, primarily resulting in hair fall. Another most severe problem is lice, an external parasite that infects the scalp.
Dandruff is caused by the fungus, which feeds on the oils on the scalp. During the rainy season, the skin on the scalp becomes dry, itchy, and irritating. Due to the humidity, the skin becomes dry skin flakes.
Due to the high humidity in the air, the hair becomes greasy and sticky. It accumulates dust
and damages the hair. The people who work on construction sites face more problems during rainy seasons as they are directly exposed to external climatic conditions.
Generally, each person loses an average of 50-100 strands of hair daily. This increases the number during monsoon season. The scalp produces extra sebum because of this monstrous monsoon, which weakens hair with a dry scalp.
Why do scalp infections increase in monsoons?
Humidity plays a crucial role in a variety of scalp infections. Scalp gets infected when dirt clogs the pores. Due to the dampness of the scalp, there are more chances of infection. Dandruff is caused due the imbalance of oil on the scalp. Dandruff is a dead skin cell accumulated on the scalp. Due to the constant change in the climatic conditions, the hair becomes dry and frizzy, as the hair gets dehydration which absorbs more moisture from the environment. As the rain in the monsoon season is unpredictable, people frequently get drenched in the rain, and the hair gets wet very often, causing breakage and hair fall. Once the scalp is infected with dandruff, it takes several weeks to reduce.
When dandruff becomes Sevier, it starts affecting the parts of the face, such as the fold around the nose, behind the ears, the forehead, the eyebrows and the eyelids.
How to control scalp infections during monsoon?
“Prevention is better than cure” as the scalp infection revokes seasonally, it’s better to take precautions. Hair needs to be taken more care of during monsoon seasons.
Regular hair wash:
Regular hair washing with mild and delicate shampoo can control scalp infections as people get drenched frequently during monsoon season. And drying the hair in natural sunlight shouldn’t tie the hair tightly when it’s wet. Use less hair styling equipment as excess moisture is favourable for bacteria, fungus and lice to grow.
Conditioning the hair:
After every hair washes, apply mild hair conditioner to the hair. The conditioner adds a protection layer for the hair and reduces the risk of damage from rainfall.
Using scarves as protection for hair while going out can absorb sweat easily. Carrying umbrella even when it’s drizzling.
Proper diet:
Besides a regular diet, drinking plenty of water, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and protein-rich food such as eggs, spinach, fatty fish, sweet potatoes, yoghurt, beans, and soya beans should be included, especially during the monsoon season.
Combing hair:
Water weakens hair follicles, so combing the hair when wet is not advisable. Instead of using a hairbrush, it’s better to use a wide-toothed comb instead of a fine-toothed one. Combs shouldn’t be shared to avoid scalp infections, especially during this season.
Maintaining hydration:
Drinking water regularly ensures the hair strands get hydrated with total, healthy nutrients. It makes the hair less sensitive to any change in humidity.
Adequate sleep:
During this season, along with a proper diet, it’s necessary to have good stress-free sleep. Maintaining sleep timings is compulsory.
These days it has become prevalent to get seasonal infections. Especially during monsoon season, proper care should be taken for hair, as it gets exposed to external climatic conditions.
