Hair Transplant is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures amongst men and women. Apart from the frequently done scalp hair transplant, beard, moustache, eyebrows, and sideburns are also fast becoming popular. Thanks to many advanced techniques like Sapphire transplantation, the actual procedure is minimally invasive, but it has particular recommendations for after-care. Out of all of them, the most important one is your sleeping/resting position. Since it is a surgery, there will be mild discomfort for a week or so after the procedure, but this period is crucial for the survival of the newly transplanted hair follicles.
What are the correct practices regarding sleeping /taking rest after a Hair Transplant procedure?
You might wonder why should I be so concerned about the sleeping position. The answer to that, whilst sleeping, there is a maximum chance of damaging your new grafts. Any pressure on the newly transplanted areas can damage both the skin around the surgical site and the transplanted hair. Below is a list of all the details that you should keep in mind while sleeping or taking a nap:-
- The recipient area must be away from the pillow, and no direct contact between your transplanted hair and the pillowcase.
- Sleep on your back and not on your stomach. The back should be in an upright position.
- The head and back should be elevated at a 45-degree angle.
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach since it will damage your transplanted hair and increase swelling.
- Another option to try is maintaining the head level above heart level while sleeping. In this position, the blood reflux to the scalp area is reduced, which it can cause swelling or bruising.
- Sleep with pillows under your knees to reduce the pressure on the surgical areas.
- Long periods of sleep can increase the stress on your scalp and elongates healing. It’s best to take short naps during the day.
All the above recommendations are not intended to make you uncomfortable. Set yourself up to lie down comfortably without creating tension on your scalp.
All about pillows for post hair transplant care
As already mentioned, try to take short naps during the day. But if you need to lie down for longer at night, use a specially designed pillow for those undergoing hair restoration. These unique pillows contain a gel-like material that helps cushion the head and relieve pressure on the neck muscles. Use more than 1 pillow to reach a 45-degree angle.
If you can’t get the unique pillow, use a soft pillow, like a memory foam that helps reduce pressure points in the head area and keeps off sweating. Sweating causes itching and also damages the hair grafts.
Put a cushion or another pillow under your pillow to keep your head correctly elevated and avoid damaging the newly transplanted hair follicles.
A neck or a travel pillow supports your head, and it will also protect the hair grafts if you turn at night during your sleep.
Maintain Cleanliness of the sleepwear
One should be careful not to infect the surgical site. So take special care in maintaining the neatness of your bed, pillowcases, and sheets. While washing them, avoid any cleaning agents which might cause itchiness or allergic reaction on the scalp since one should not scratch their scalp during recovery. Scratching damages both the grafted and donor areas. Once you start scratching, it just keeps on increasing since itching increases.
When can I sleep normally after a hair transplant procedure?
Within one to two weeks, you can start sleeping usually. Within these 7-14 days, the transplanted hair grafts are safe and enrooted in the recipient area. All the suggestions will save you from discomfort, pain, itching, sweating and infection. Follow all other suggestions regarding hair wash, shampoos, hair styling, hair braiding, wearing hats or scarfs over the scalp, medications, and combing as prescribed. You can return to normalcy quickly.
Needless to say that eating a healthy diet rich in protein and vitamins for at least 1 week after the operation will speed up the recovery process.
