The success of the hair transplant mainly depends on the transplanted hair from the donor area to the recipients to remain healthy. After the hair transplant, primarily, the results are shown between six to nine months. Some patients show the results slowly, maybe after 12 months. The patients should be aware that the newly transplanted hair falls off after two to eight weeks of surgery, which is typical. For a hair transplant, a beard is ideal. If not available, the hair is from other parts of the body, such as hair from the arm, underarm, pubic region, thigh, and legs. Usually, women have unstable hair patterns, whereas men have stable hair patterns.
For a successful hair transplant, the main factors to be considered are the quality clinic, the type of procedure chosen with the extent of hair loss, and last but not least, the whole process is done thoroughly, depending on the surgeon. The success rate also depends on how and what precautions we take per the doctor’s advice. Below is the list of factors determining a hair transplant’s success.
Downtime matters
After the 24 hours of surgery will be crucial, as the patient is advised not to do excessive physical activity. After eight weeks of the surgery, the patients can return to everyday life. It is just a temporary phase for a permanent long-term solution, and the person may feel nervous about the results, which is quite a normal phenomenon. It takes a little bit longer to gain back enough confidence to return to normal activities after the hair transplant.
Avoiding strenuous activities
The first 72 hours post-surgery of a hair transplant are crucial for recovery. Most doctors recommend avoiding exercise and other strenuous activities(bending at the waist, jogging, and sit-ups) for about two weeks after the hair transplant, as this increases blood flow to the scalp, which is unsuitable for newly transplanted hair. Any physical activity which increases blood pressure on the scalp that leads to sweat should be avoided during this period. Instead, the person can opt for yoga and other light exercises. It’s better to withhold any form of weight train, bodybuilding, or cardio exercises at least 3-7 days before the surgery.
Avoid hair wash
Avoid washing for the first 72 hours of the procedure so that the scalp gets ample time for healing. After the given period, it’s better to wash the hair with mild shampoo and wash gently. Just take a few drops of shampoo in a cup, add water, shake it well to get a lather, then apply it to the scalp and rinse it softly with clean water. It’s better to avoid showering under the spray.
Avoid headwear
It’s better to avoid headwear for a couple of days after the surgery. After a week, the person can start wearing loose headwear. After the added five days, the patient can wear any headwear.
Avoid alcohol and smoking.
Drinking alcohol before the recovery period can diminish the blood supply to the hair grafts inserted by the surgical procedure. In short, it results in a tragic ending after the system. For a couple of days, nicotine (smoking) should be completely stopped before and after the procedure, as advised by the surgeon.
Every implanted hair graft needs oxygen and all the nutrients it carries. The nicotine restricts the hair grafts from getting all the nutrients required for the blood vessel. Smoking can retard the healthy growth of transplant hair.
Avoid scratching
In the healing process, the person gets an itching sensation but does not scratch as the newly implanted hair follicle is still delicate and is likely to fall off. To get relief from itching, the doctors recommend applying vaseline. It’s better to avoid direct exposure to sunlight for a few weeks of post-surgery.
Stay Hydrated
Most people forget that drinking water at regular intervals hydrates the body and hair and needs to be hydrated(especially the new implanted hair). For a couple of weeks, the person should set a reminder to drink at least 10% more water for fast recovery.
Avoid applying ice directly
An ice pack can be applied after a day of hair transplant to reduce swelling, which may occur after the 3rd or 4th day of the procedure. Ice should be used on the forehead beneath the grafts and not directly on the grafts.
Avoid fast food
It’s better to avoid fast food as it’s full of empty nutrients and calories. The newly implanted hair needs lots of nutrients to grow thick, soft, sleek, strong, and beautiful. If the person is not getting enough nutrients in the diet, it’s better to include food supplements like calcium, magnesium, lots of protein, iron, vitamin B6, and zinc.
