Hair Transplantation is a great decision for anyone looking for a long-term hair loss solution. The success of the procedure is heavily dependent on post-hair transplant hair care. Our everyday life revolves around the sun. Hence sun exposure is inevitable. We might be travelling from one location to another or while working outside, but care should be taken during these times. Sunbathing should be fully avoided as this will be detrimental to hair’s health. Sunbathing is harmful to the healing process and should be avoided until the healing process is complete.
Why should I avoid the sun after a Hair Transplant?
As part of the healing process, the newly implanted hair follicles must be able to root themselves. Exposure to the sun will damage the skin and also the hair follicles. The surgery fails or may require additional treatment. The perspiration generated by the sun is a barrier to healing and affects your hair transplant negatively.
How does the Skin Damage occur due to Sun Exposure?
As part of a hair transplant, incisions are made which are sensitive to light. The ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun harm the incisions. The healing process gets disturbed and results in excess scarring.
The skin is composed of cells called chromatophores responsible for the skin’s pigmentation. When exposed to the sun, these chromatophores darken the skin and protect it from exposure. But after a transplant, these cells either die off or go dormant, and it takes several months for these cells to regenerate in the newly transplanted grafts. Hence, the transplanted skin is at a greater risk for sun damage.
Why does sun exposure damage the Hair Follicles?
During a hair transplant, several layers of the skin are affected, not just the surface layer. The surface layer of the epidermis heals relatively quickly. It can take much longer for the deeper tissues to heal. When exposed to the sun, the exposure can penetrate the epidermis, damaging the underlying tissues and hair follicles that have not yet healed. The result is a failure of hair transplantation.
How Long Will I Need Protection from the Sun?
For at least four months, one should be careful, however, in varying degrees of care. Over some time, we recommend wearing a hat, and it must provide full coverage of the transplant area during this time. Please do not use any gels or styling products until the incisions fully heal. Please be mindful and follow the post-operative guidelines will increase your chances of transplant success. You don’t have to bind yourself inside, but you can protect your scalp with hats, scarfs etc. But be careful that there is no sweating. Sweat again is not good for the healing of the surgical site. It can also cause infections. Although you should avoid direct sunlight, this does not imply that you should remain inside on bright days. However, ensure that your scalp is properly covered when you go outside.
