Hair transplantation today has emerged as a sophisticated surgery that gives excellent results and natural looking hair line. Gone are the early days of hair plugs. The patient enjoys healthy, long-lasting hair after the surgery. Apart from the desired look, patients also see scarring.
All the latest and most experienced hair transplant clinics use two popular surgical techniques, each leaving behind a different type of scar. Please remember that the surgeon’s skill and experience greatly influence how much scarring will occur. Along with hair transplant techniques, wound-closure techniques also improved.
Impact of surgical technique on hair transplant:
Hair Transplant procedures
The two most widely used and popular hair transplant procedures are follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT):-
FUE – Follicular Unit Extraction
The donor used for FUE is from the back and sides of the scalp. The surgeon will extract each hair follicle graft using a micro punch tool. After every extraction, a round scar is left behind up to 1 millimetre in diameter.
So the number of punch mark scars depends on how many hair follicles are extracted.so there could be hundreds or even thousands of puncture mark scars, and they will appear like tiny white dots after healing. One hair follicle comprises one to four hairs.
The extracted hair follicles are carefully grafted onto the recipient areas of the scalp. Small incisions are made at the recipient area. The surgery might take many hours and is repeated several times to achieve the best result.
FUT – Follicular Unit Transplantation
In a FUT, a scalp strip containing hair from the donor area is removed surgically. The chosen donor area is on the back of the scalp. After the donor hair strip is, the site is sutured together. The scar will be linear and has varying lengths based on the size of the strip extracted. For some, it might extend from ear to ear. The hair follicle grafts from the removed strip are prepared for grafting onto the recipient areas. Similar to FUE, small incisions are made at the recipient area.
Though an outpatient procedure, the patient is given local anaesthesia. The FUT procedure may produce more pain and swelling than the FUE procedure. Results vary from person to person.
Hair transplant scar removal
Several procedures can reduce the size of the scar created in the FUT procedure. As one ages, the scalp sags naturally, widening the spot or making it more visible. Medications also help in thinning scar tissue. Healthy skin holds on to graft much better than scarred skin.
Concealing of scars
Cosmetically concealing is another option for growing your hair over the donor area. Keloid scars are more challenging to hide than surgical scars. Keloid scars have a raised appearance, and they are larger than the original surgical scar.
Please inform the surgeon beforehand if you have ever had a keloid scar since some bodies are prone to their formation.
Scar removal techniques
Scalp micro pigmentation – SMP (scalp hair tattooing)– This is a permanent procedure where the pigment is injected directly into the scalp, so the hair appears thicker. One can also colour the scarred areas left behind by FUE or FUT. Depending on the site, one might need several sessions to complete. The ink colour is selected to be as close to the current hair colour as possible. If the hair eventually goes grey or lightens, the ink won’t lighten the same way.
Tricopigmentation (TMP) – TMP is a temporary form of the earlier SMP procedure. The ink is inserted only into the top layer of the dermis. The ink inserted via TMP lasts anywhere from six months to three years.
Laser treatment: Laser is sometimes used in conjunction with SMP or TMP. The laser beam mainly targets and clears the damaged skin on the scar’s surface. The laser also helps generate collagen in the skin’s dermis layer, rejuvenating the elasticity and overall appearance of the skin.
For many worldwide, hair transplant surgery is a safe and effective way to regain confidence and self-esteem. Scarring happens in both the FUE and FUT procedures.
