Usually everything has a cure. Alopecia Areata is different.
We can google, search or hunt, but there is no cure for Alopecia Areata. Even though there have been many trials with different medicines thought to cure the condition, there isn’t any foolproof medicine which eradicates the condition completely.
Though there are corticosteroids, drugs or strong anti inflammatory drugs can often suppress the immune system and might withhold the effects of the condition for some time. Nonetheless, this is a temporary treatment since this condition is highly unpredictable in nature.
There are other medicines as well which might stimulate the regrowth of hair, but they are not meant to prevent the formation of new patches on the skin.
Some of them are:
Intralesional Corticosteroid Injections: This treatment involves injecting steroids in the bald patch of the skin directly. These injections are to be repeated every four to six weeks.
The results of these injections are visible within three to four weeks and new hair growth is seen on the scalp.
The drawbacks of these injections are that, even though they stimulate the growth of new hair in the body, they do not prevent hair loss from happening again. Also, there have been reports mentioning some of the side effects of these injections called ‘temporary depressions’ of the skin that occur.
Anthralin Cream: This cream is thick and dark in texture. It is used very commonly in treating alopecia areata. The cream is usually applied to the patches of skin which are devoid of hair and then post 30-60 minutes, it is washed off with water.
This is not a foolproof solution just like corticosteroids, if new hair growth is visible, it is usually seen within eight to twelve weeks. It also results in a temporary discoloration of the skin if used more frequently than required.
Cosmetic Solution:
When all else fails, there is always another option which provides a solution for people who need a more permanent fix.
Mesotherapy
A common procedure which is opted for fixing Alopecia Areata is Mesotherapy. This is a non-invasive surgical procedure, where active substances are administered just below the epidermis with the superficial micro injections. Some of the substances which are used in the procedure are minoxidil, vitamins, medications and plant extracts. This procedure is helpful with prevention of hair loss, activation of new hair growth and improvement of the quality of existing hair as well. Also with the help of this procedure the environment of the hair follicle improves which results in better growth.
Non-invasive cosmetic surgeries have proven to be more effective as a fix for hair loss only when done by a reputed cosmetic surgeon or institute. It is very important to know that even though cosmetic procedures can fix Alopecia, the condition is highly unpredictable and can relapse anytime.
