Hair Transplant is becoming one of the most sought out cosmetic procedures out there. Methods such as FUE, FUT, and Sapphire Hair Transplant increase patients’ confidence about hair transplants. Moreover, these procedures are producing natural-looking results, due to which more and more are opting for hair transplants. However, to enjoy long-lasting results for the first few weeks, there are some things you should avoid. This blog will look at 8 things to avoid after a hair transplant procedure.
Remember that during the Hair transplant procedure, you will be sedated. So please make sure that somebody is accompanying you to drive you back home.
1. Avoid Sleeping Flat
Although hair transplantation is a minor procedure, one should remember it is still a surgery. Like other surgeries, swelling around the surgical site may be a common symptom of the patients’ experience. Therefore, the patient should sleep with the head elevated at a 45-degree angle for the first seven days soon after the surgery. Sleeping like this prevents swelling and hence aids in quicker wound healing. Do not sleep on your stomach or side, and avoid rubbing the new hairline against the pillow. To avoid tossing and turning at night, cover yourself with a heavy blanket or sleep on a recliner.
2. Avoid Hair wash
Hair wash is a strict NO-NO within the first 48 hours after your hair transplant procedure. Gentle hair wash can be done on the third day. Use a mild shampoo and do not squeeze the shampoo directly on the scalp. Instead, take the shampoo in a cup and apply it gently on the scalp with your hands. Avoid scratching or rubbing too hard.
3. Avoid Styling Hair Products
The harsh chemicals in the styling products are counter-productive to the success of your hair transplant procedure. Wait for at least 4 weeks before applying a dye or any other styling product. The transplanted follicles are in an incredibly fragile state for several weeks after the transplantation, so give them all the care you can.
4. Avoid De-Hydration
We cannot imagine a life without water. But staying hydrated is even more essential after a hair transplant. When the body is appropriately hydrated, you will not only feel comfortable, but your recovery will also be faster. For a couple of weeks after the surgery, consciously drink 10% of more water than you usually drink, and it makes a remarkable difference in your entire recovery process. There are many mobile apps available that can remind you to drink water. The best way to know if you are consuming enough water is to check the urine colour. The urine colour must be translucent to very pale yellow.
5. Avoid ice and sun directly to the scalp.
Since it is mentioned that one should stay hydrated, do not mistake applying ice directly to the areas of your scalp with transplanted hair. For the first three days, avoid touching the area. After 72 hours, you can very gently touch your scalp and only if required. In case of an itchy scalp, apply conditioner rather than scratching it. Do not expose the scalp to direct sunlight between 10 AM and 2 PM for the first two weeks after your hair transplant.
6. Avoid strain and sweat.
In the first seven days following the treatment, do not engage in heavy exercise, swimming, weight lifting etc. during any of these activities, there is a lot of sweat, and it affects the scalp too. Stay away from steaming and sauna rooms too. It is important not to sweat and to keep your heart rate and blood pressure within a safe, normal range in these seven days. After that, one can engage in walks, yoga, and meditation.
7. Avoid Drinking and Smoking
Alcohol is a known de-hydrant and should be avoided the first five days after the treatment. Hence, consuming alcohol prolongs your recovery time, increases discomfort, raises your blood pressure to an unsafe level, reduces blood supply and crucial nutrients to your head. In addition, abstain from smoking, taking nicotine e-liquids, nicotine gum and nicotine patches for a month after your treatment. They all elevate your blood pressure. However, it is understandable that one cannot quit these habits the next day of the surgery. Hence, it is recommended that while planning for a hair transplant, start cutting down on alcohol and smoking so that it will be easy for you to continue the same after the treatment.
8. Avoid these foods and drinks.
During recovery, one may not feel like cooking, but eating well-balanced nutritious food is the key to healthy blood flow and adequate hydration during your recovery period. More nutrients in your food will result in thick, healthy, soft, sleek, strong and beautiful hair. Avoid fast foods, soda, processed juice, baked goods and other foods that contain lots of sugar. Fast food not only lacks nutrients but also enhances blood sugar levels. It is worth knowing that fast food is typically devoid of nutrients and full of empty calories. Instead, eat or take supplements rich in calcium, magnesium, protein, iron, vitamin B6, zinc, biotin and protein.
