If you thought ‘No Shave November’ is the only time of the year when men take their beards seriously, then no, that’s the biggest misconception you need to get rid of. Men take a lot of pride in their beards, and just like women like flaunting their lustrous hair, men love showing off their beards, too!
But then, like everything else, beards also come in different types, or sometimes, have difficulty in showing up, altogether. So before we begin, let’s answer a few questions, shall we?
Are you unsatisfied with your beard?
Is it not dense enough?
Does it cause you trouble to pull off a certain style?
Does it make you upset?
If you’ve said yes mentally to one or more of these questions, let’s talk about it further.
Worry not. You are not the only one. At HairSure, we are presented with many many such cases – each more challenging than the other. Your trouble may seem very ‘troubling’, or you may find it ‘common’, but only after careful analysis of your skin, the doctors can tell you your best options. One such option is going for a beard hair transplant surgery.
Let’s hear the story of Illyas (name changed).
Illyas, 26, was training in a vocational training institute in Pune. He aims to become a model. As a part of his job profile, he needs to be well-groomed and have a very pleasing personality. Although he has been praised by his co-trainees and his trainers for his capabilities, a few potential employers have rejected him saying he didn’t look appealing – he has a very low beard density! He was disheartened. Not that he was not trying to improve – he tried home remedies and testosterone shots. But nothing visibly worked for him.
“Then one day,” in Illyas’s own words, “a confidante told me about HairSure and hair transplantation. I was hesitant at the beginning. Surgery scares me and cosmetic surgeries are still stigmatized in our society. Plus, I had never heard about anything called a beard surgery. But I had no other way – my professional life was at stake! So, one morning, I pulled my guts together and dialled the clinic’s number. The person on the other end had a careful ear. She listened to me very patiently and asked only a few questions in between. Then she explained to me that a beard hair transplant surgery was not the only way and only after examining my case in person, will the doctors be able to say what kind of treatment I would require. She also assured me that if it comes to hair transplantation, the hospital is very strict about maintaining a subject’s privacy. I then decided to fly to Hyderabad. I wasn’t still sure if I would go through the beard surgery. I mostly wanted to consult a doctor.”
When he arrived at the clinic, his consultation with a doctor was set up. He looked into his current situation and his medical history. After undergoing some tests, the doctor suggested that he opt for implants since that would be the safest option, and not to mention, the most efficient.
“My worst fear had come true. I felt like flying back that instant. But, I guess, the doctor read my face. He smiled and said, “Don’t worry. It only sounds like a ‘surgery’, but it isn’t even nearly as scary as the word suggests. We will use a local anaesthesia before the beard surgery and you will not feel a thing, let alone pain! In fact, you can fly to Pune the next day, if you want.” The last statement calmed me. Seeing me a little relaxed, he asked me to take some time to think about it. But though I was still worried, I wanted to be done with it. So I asked the doctor for further details. He explained me the procedure, the risks, the after-care and the tentative cost of it.” say Illyas.
For the transplantation, the doctor finds the most suitable hair from other parts of the body. While most matches can be found on the scalp, sometimes body hair may also be used. The doctor harvests live hair follicles/tissues from the donor site and implants them in the facial area. Depending on the desired and initial density, a pre-calculated amount of hairs are transplanted.
The transplanted hair needs to be kept dry and away from sunlight. Formation of small crystals at the base of each implanted hair is normal. The sutures dissolve within a week of the beard hair transplant surgery.
“The doctor told me that the transplanted hair would shed before new hair grows. Around two weeks after the surgery, when they started to fall, I panicked. I reminded myself again and again of what the doctor said. But I still got restless and called my doctor. He again explained me calmly that this was normal. But I could only breathe in relief when new hair started to grow. It took almost 3-4 months, but boy did it look amazing! I had an amazing beard now. It was just as dense as I hoped it to be. I could shave it as I like, I could trim it as I liked and of course, I could style it as I liked! This was probably one of the best things that happened to me.”
Illyas is happily employed with a talent agency now.
